Abstract

Objectives : This study is a similarity experimentation using the nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design in order to examine the effect of mastectomy education for women with mastectomy and supporting education for their spouses on the quality of life of the women.

Methods : The data was collected between Aug. and Oct., 2002 from 15 womens of experimental group and another 15 of control group selected randomly from women with mastectomy for breast cancer during 2001 in the general surgery department of a hospital with more than 500 beds located in the Gyeongsangbuk-do province. After performing the mastectomy education for the women and the supporting education for their spouses, interviews for consultation was carried out in the second and fourth weeks by visiting their home, and telephone and e-mail counsel was executed in the third week for each of them. The detailed contents of the education were on: the knowledge and information about cancer (definition of cancer, symptom, kinds, risk factors and cure); depilation and diet; breast rehabilitation plastic surgery, the functional and mental rehabilitation after operation; and the necessity for spouse¢¥s support and methods of spouse supporting activity. The data were analyzed by f-test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and analysis of simple main effect.

Results : The hypothesis saying ¢¥the group with educations for women and their spouses with mastectomy has higher living quality than those without educations¢¥ was supported(F=13.40, p=0.001).

Conclusions : On the basis of this result, it can be deduced that most women with mastectomy are in need of physical, mental and social support, and their spouses are one of the most important resources who can help the women¢¥s emotional feeling. In this sense, it is concluded that we can improve the qualities of lives of the women with mastectomy, as their spouses perceive more clearly for the demand of the women and perform more properly supporting activity through the mastectomy education for the women and supporting education for their spouses.

Consequently, we should raise the qualities of lives of the women through the mastectomy education and supporting education for their spouses, and concurrently improve the education program by finding the factors to increase their qualities of lives in order to utilize as practical education programs.
